Cooking in Oz: Kitchen Wizardry from America's Favorite Fairy Tale

Elaine Willingham and Stephen Cox

Celebrate a century of Oz with this tasty, illustrated cookbook inspired by the most popular of all American fairy tales. Everyone knows the story of Dorothy and her trail-blazing adventures through the magical land of Oz.

This blend of culinary favorites and Oz anecdotes and photographs combines to form a truly unique book. For every fan of The Wizard of Oz there is fresh trivia, interesting and brief quotes, and astounding never-before-published photographs all supporting recipes contributed from the private files of dozens of prominent Oz personalities and celebrities. Nowhere — "Not no how," as the Cowardly Lion would say — will fans ever see a more superb selection of "food photographs" directly related to the many themes within The Wizard of Oz.

When sentimental Auntie Em suggested that Dorothy "find a place where you won't get into any trouble," she meant the kitchen. (Somewhere over the microwave? Where troubles melt like lemon drops...) In the film she hands the farm workers a plate of food. ("Here, it's hard work on an empty stomach. Have some crullers. Just fried.") Naturally, dear Auntie Em's famous crullers can be found in Cooking in Oz along with other favorites. Here are easy-to-make dishes, even for those with heads made of straw.

"Cooking in Oz will keep fans of the Oz legends eagerly turning the paperback's pages even if they never go near the kitchen. Authors Elaine Willingham and Steve Cox have assembled not only recipes but also an assortment of anecdotes, memories and photos from a wide range of people connected with the story since its first appearance 100 years ago. The original, 'The Wizard of Oz,' by L. Frank Baum, was published as a children's book in 1900. It turned into a 20th-century cultural phenomenon, immortalized in the classic 1939 film, and subsequent film, television and musical-theater versions. That adds up to a huge cast of collaborators, and their families and descendants, with stories to tell and favorite foods to offer." —The Associated Press

"A time-capsule...twists and turns in its journey down the yellow brick road...cleverly written and assembled by Oz historians." —Cult Movies Magazine, 1999

"If you are a 'Wizard' fan you will enjoy this book full of pictures of Garland and other Oz characters." —Enid News and Eagle (4/28/00)

ELAINE WILLINGHAM has owned and operated Beyond the Rainbow, a mail-order business devoted to Oz, for more than ten years. From her offices in St. Louis, she maintains a popular Wizard of Oz Web site, the best of its kind.

STEPHEN COX is a freelance writer currently living in Los Angeles. He has written more than a dozen successful books on film and television, including The Munchkins of Oz, Here’s Johnny! The Munsters, The Addams Chronicles, The Abbott & Costello Story, Dreaming of Jeannie, and Here on Gilligan’s Isle. Cox worked closely with Buddy Ebsen as researcher and editor for the actor’s autobiography, The Other Side of Oz, in 1993.
